Fried.... Boiled.... Poached.... Or were they Scrambled...

That's the soundtrack from the NBC sitcom featuring Kelsey Grammar as Radio psychiatrist Frasier Crane... enjoyed a few hilarious laughs from the series. Just one of the things we look back on about yesterday...

Yes... "Yesterday... All my troubles seemed so far away".... Ooh... that sound like a Beatles' song, doesn't it.... Here's some trivia about the song... it actually started as 'Scrambled Eggs'... This one's guaranteed to get you some laughs....

Speaking of eggs, my mind races back to the all the weddings I've attended as a young boy... In those days before the buffet became a standard, dinner used to be served in plated meals... and the most colourful thing on the plate was this half of a boiled egg where the yolk (yellow) was replaced with a mixture including mayonnaise smoothly piped into them. The dish is called 'Devilled Eggs'  

It's Easter Sunday today.... and you possibly enjoyed your eggs with chocolate or marzipan... or filled with little chickens. Or possibly you liked the bunnies.... Maybe you enjoyed an Egg Hunt with the kids.... If you did, are you 'Putting All Your Eggs In One Basket'.

Do you know any song with your name in it?

If you're name is Maria... then you probably find it difficult to keep track of the songs with your name. My sister Priya had songs in Hindi with her name in them.

Though I have a common name - you'd find two or three Sunil's in any gathering, no matter how small. But I have the privilege to hear my surname in this one song. 

Nel blu di pinto di blu is literally translated from Italian to 'In the blue that is painted blue'. So I guess the Pinto in the song is a conjugation of the verb that has something to do with paint. And speaking of blue, there a lot more blue in my name. Never knew the meaning of my name till one baby names guide translated Sunil to 'Deep Dark Blue'.

And while we are in the blue, you probably heard the phrase “once in a blue moon”. Do you know what it means... As far as I know, the 'blue moon' refers to the second occurence of the moon in a calendar month... but I look forward to this Blue Moon.

Actually had a jumpy version of that song for a while sung by The Marcels. While blue in music often refers to sadness, the Blue Moon here had a wonderful sense of Amore.

That's a whole lot of love going around... and we all know that Everybody Loves Somebody sometime.

If you've been following this blog over any part of the past two years, you possibly would've guessed that this post is a tribute to Dean Martin... oh yes, it is. I still remember finding a cassette (you may not know what that is anymore) of his songs at home and really enjoyed these oldies. And of course my Dad enjoyed singing a lot of these songs including Buona Sera.

An on this wonderful evening we recall the wonderful music that Dean Martin gave us during his lifetime that started A Hundred Years From Now.

This tribute to a great singer would be incomplete without the wish for a Pink (read happy) life - La Vie En Rose.

The Language of Love

Been inundated with Valentines messages, Anniversary greetings (to the many friends who chose to get married on Valentine's Day) and a whole lot of messages about God's love on Facebook and WhatsApp since morning. Among the popular posts is the Facebook Profile Picture Frame Overlay (what a long name for something so simple) from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

  
Who is Valentine?

The other Valentine that we know of is Rudolph Valentino - the 'Latin lover' of the silent movies in the 1920s. The first time I heard this name though was as part of the song Viva Y Espana by Sylvia.

Did I mention that Rudolph Valentino was Italian... and love in Italian is That's Amore (Dean Martin).

Amor Amor Amor is the word for 'love' in Spanish... and that song by Dean Martin was a bigger hit for Julio Iglesias.

In the City of Love, the 'song of love' is Chanson d'Amour (Manhattan Transfer).

Back to the universal language, here's my cover of Nat King Cole's L-O-V-E.

And all this talk about love reminded me of a beautiful song that my dad used to sing - The Glory of Love sung by The Platters.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

Going Places...

Took a little trip over the weekend just outside Mumbai city limits. With summer holidays on over the past couple of months, my Facebook and Twitter 'newsfeed' have been full of holiday pictures from across the globe. And when I looked up the #MusicalBirthday list for today, I found a common thread linking most of them - all the birthday musicians and singers were 'going places'

We'll start this tour with the youngest of the singers on this post, just 23 - George Ezra - in the medieval and neoclassical capital city of Hungary - Budapest.

Looks like George Ezra, the English singer-songwriter loves to travel, considering he also has a song entitled 'Barcelona'. Many visitors to Spain also do France and Italy. 

One American singer, actor, comedian and film producer of the 60s loved his Italian roots. Dean Martin - a member of the Rat Pack had a host of songs about Italy, but the one I love the most is about 'love' - 'That's Amore' 

Dean Martin would've been 99 today, having been born in 1917. And what a wonderful life. Back in America - the state of Minnesota - are observing 'Prince Day' today remembering the recently deceased Prince. If you're in Minnesota, you'd probably see many people dressed in purple (if you do see purple all around, click a pic and post it in the comments here). The only city song Prince is famous for cannot be mentioned here, but we can sure listen to 'America'.

Our final 'Birthday Singer' for today is 76. And he likes the 'Green Green Grass of Home' - a song I mentioned on one of the first posts on the blog (Green Songs From The Past) for its personal meaning to me. Over to the vibrant Tom Jones.
